Today would have been David Bowie’s 72nd birthday. To commemorate this date, an augmented reality application of the ‘David Bowie Is’ museum exhibit is being released today for iOS and Android devices.

Since its launch at the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum) in London in March 2013 until its last stop at the Brooklyn Museum in New York City in July 2018, the exhibit which featured approximately 500 items spanning across five decades, has attracted over 2 million visitors across 12 cities.

According to David Bowie’s website, which refers to the V&A as being the “the world’s greatest museum of decorative arts, design and performance”, the David Bowie Is exhibit set a record at the V&A for “the most visited touring exhibition”.

Among the 12 cities visited by the touring exhibit, only three were in North America, with the only Canadian stop being at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, from September 25th to November 29, 2013, immediately after its debut in London.

Thanks to a collaboration between Sony Music Entertainment
(Japan) Inc. (who hosted the museum exhibit in Tokyo in 2017), the David Bowie
Archive, Planeta, and the V&A, fans can enjoy an augmented reality adaptation
of the exhibit in the comfort of their own home, or anywhere for that matter.
The app will include items displayed in 3D and will allow the user to interact
with the content, for example, allowing users to virtually try on Bowie’s
outfits. It will also include 60 new items that were not included in the
original museum exhibits.

Oscar-winning actor and Bowie’s close friend, Gary Oldman, will be the narrator for the David Bowie Is mobile app. The two met in the late 1980’s and became close friends, and Oldman also starred as a priest in Bowie’s 2013 music video for “The Next Day”.

A virtual reality adaption of the exhibit will be released at a later date in the spring. A documentary also titled “David Bowie Is” was filmed on the last night of the V&A exhibit in London, which was directed by Hamish Hamilton, Katy Mullan, and Hanif Kureishi.
